HOLTS SUMMIT — The Missouri State Highway Patrol is investigating the death of a 30-year-old man in a shootout with a sheriff's deputy.
The man was identified Wednesday as 30-year-old Jason Voss, of Holts Summit.
The Highway Patrol said Voss' brother called the Callaway County Sheriff's Department on Tuesday night and said Voss was suicidal and asking for a check of his well-being.
When a deputy arrived, the patrol said, Voss came out of his house and began shooting. The unidentified deputy fired back, shooting Voss. Voss later died at St. Mary's Health Center in nearby Jefferson City.
The deputy is on paid administrative leave while the patrol investigates.
