UPDATE: Deer hunting accident victim dies

COLUMBIA — A 67-year-old man who was shot in the abdomen while deer hunting Saturday morning died later that day, according to a news release from the Callaway County Sheriff's Department.

As previously reported by the Missourian, the victim was hunting east of Auxvasse near County Road 1027. He was shot while another member of his hunting party was removing his gun from its shoulder sling. The victim, identified as Bernie Breer of St. Louis, was airlifted to University Hospital, where he later died, the news release stated.

The shooting was believed to have been an accident. The Callaway County Sheriff's Department and the Missouri Department of Conservation were continuing to investigate the incident Sunday.
