COLUMBIA – The bodies of a young woman and her infant son were found Saturday afternoon after a house exploded in Williamsburg, according to a news release from the Callaway County Sheriff's Department.

The North Callaway Fire Protection District responded to the reported explosion just after 4 p.m., and the two bodies were discovered at about 5:30 p.m. The victims were later identified as Amber Smith, 20, and her 4-month-old son Simon Smith.

The two were believed to be residents of the home, and a third resident was not present at the time of the explosion.

The house was located in the 3800 block of County Road 144.

The cause of the explosion had not yet been determined Sunday and the investigation was ongoing.

Autopsies are scheduled for Monday at the Boone/Callaway County Medical Examiner's Office.

The Callaway County Sheriff's Department, Missouri State Highway Patrol, Central Callaway Fire Protection District and the Missouri State Fire Marshal's Office responded to the call.
