PrintCOLUMBIA — In a regular pre-council meeting Monday, the Columbia City Council discussed the following:
- Applications for the Comprehensive Plan Task Force
- Columbia’s snow removal policy
- Federal funding projects
The City Council must choose 15 applicants to be on a task force to develop the city’s Comprehensive Plan for 2010.
- A total of 18 applications were received, with the application deadline having been extended three times.
- Selections will be announced at the council's next meeting, Dec. 7.
“I think that’s disappointing that so few people applied,” First Ward Councilman Paul Sturtz said.
The council also discussed the city’s 2009 snow removal plan, detailing changes in snow routes and street priorities.
- Twelve to 15 inches of snow is predicted for this winter.
- A map on the city’s Web site details streets and their priorities in snow removal.
- The city has the capacity to hold 5,000 tons of salt to clear snow and ice.
- The city asks residents to keep parked cars off of streets as much as possible in order to efficiently and safely allow plows through.
City Manager Bill Watkins delivered to the council a first draft of a priority list of projects for which the city plans to ask for federal funding in 2010.
Those projects include:
- East Columbia transportation extension to Interstate 70
- Airport overpass at Route H
- Building of a Two Mile Prairie wastewater treatment facility
- Airport runway reconstruction and extension
- COLT Railroad upgrade
- U.S. 63, Route WW and Route AC interchange improvements
- The purchase of 14 transit vehicles
- Revitalization of Eighth Street downtown
A full list detailing expenses will be available online soon, Watkins said.
