Recent actions of Missouri students to promote the use of coal-free energy at MU have made continuous headlines. We want MU to become a leader among universities nationwide, paving the way towards a cleaner environment. MU should take the initiative toward a coal free campus because of health and environmental concerns. In addition,MU's management has shown through conservation efforts that transitioning to clean energy has proven to be cost effective.

Your writers have rightfully written about Coal Free Mizzou’s efforts to reiterate their importance. Students and the Columbia community need to be informed that 40 percent of our nation’s carbon dioxide comes from coal-power generation, a major contributor to global warming. MU can be a national leader among more thsn 20 other universities and colleges participating in Sierra Club’s movement to move beyond coal by taking proactive steps.

Although coal seems to be an efficient source of energy, we need to implement alternatives to sustain our health and the environment. The students are calling on Chancellor Brady Deaton to open doors to clean energy and national leadership on campus.
