Former Missouri lawmakers sentenced for obstruction of justice

ST. LOUIS — Former St. Louis lawmaker Jeff Smith has been sentenced to one year and one day in prison in an obstruction-of-justice case.

The former Democratic state senator also was fined $50,000 at a hearing Tuesday. His attorney sought in-home detention, but U.S. District Judge Carol Jackson said the crime deserved prison time.

Also sentenced was former Democratic state Rep. Steve Brown, who was placed on probation for two years and fined $40,000.

A third man involved in the case, Nick Adams, received two years of probation and was fined $5,000.

All three men pleaded guilty in August to federal charges stemming from wrongdoing during Smith's ill-fated run for Congress in 2004. Brown aided Smith's campaign, and Adams was the campaign treasurer.

Smith and Brown resigned from the General Assembly in August.
