JEFFERSON CITY — Missouri emergency management officials have created a statewide organization that will promote efforts to improve 911 coverage in the state.
Local 911 directors intend to push for a fee on wireless and Internet-based telephone service that will be used to improve 911 service. Attempts to approve that fee have failed for several years, but emergency officials hope that organizing their efforts through a newly created Missouri 911 Directors Association will help.
The directors want to get support from local officials and present state lawmakers with draft legislation that would set up a fee. They also plan to work with wireless phone carriers.
