COLUMBIA — Rock Bridge girls basketball coach Jill Nagel said she expected aggressive play from the mix of varsity and junior varsity players competing in Thursday's annual preseason Green and Gold scrimmage. The game, full of lead changes and physical play with both teams in the double bonus for fouls, required an overtime to be decided.
“There’s definitely competitiveness,” Nagel said. “People are still vying for starting spots and varsity spots and that’s just the style we like to play. We like to play uptempo and so there’s times when we don’t necessarily go out wanting to foul, but its kind of a by-product of how we play.”
The Bruins, who made it to the state quarterfinals last season, graduated three of last year’s starters including Katherine Harry, their leading scorer, rebounder and shot blocker. This season, the team is relying on leadership from Amaya Williams, a three-year starter and point guard. Williams, a senior, scored 13 points and junior Emily Holt scored 16 for the Gold team while senior Any Trass led the Green team with 16 points.
The Bruins season-opener will be against Francis Howell Central at 4 p.m. on Nov. 27 at the Turkey Shootout at St. Joseph’s Academy in St. Louis.
