PrintCOLUMBIA — MU fraternities and sororities will implement several changes to their social policy that will affect their sponsored parties.
The changes come in response to an incident in September in which a bus ran over a man at a fraternity event hosted by three Greek organizations at Les Bourgeois Winery.
Additionally, two female MU students reported they were sexually assaulted in two separate incidents after events at the winery, though that was not cited as a reason for the policy changes.
The new policy will:
- Allow only two organizations to sponsor an event;
- Limit the number of guests to 700;
- Require a "sober monitor" to be at an event;
- Require fraternities and sororities to provide a confirmed list of guests one day before an event;
- Require that any establishment where a chapter chooses to host an event be certified by the State of Missouri Alcohol Responsibility Training program; and
- Require all chapters must be in good standing with the Office of Greek Life, the Interfraternity Council and/or Panhellenic Association and their national or international organization, and participate in a social safety presentation to do so.
Ryan Morimura, MU Interfraternity Council spokesman, left open the idea of more changes to the policy.
“I don’t feel that these are sweeping changes,” he said in the Missourian. “It’s up to the new boards to decide if there needs to be new changes, but we feel that this is a good start.”
