COLUMBIA — Andrew Spaedy is just one of nearly 200 Rock Bridge teens working to meet Columbia’s needs.
Spaedy, a senior, volunteers for Big Brothers Big Sisters through the high school's student-run service program. He also serves on Columbia’s Voluntary Action Center board as one of two youth members.
Columbia’s students are part of a bigger picture. Today’s youth are giving back more than ever before.
A study commissioned by The Volunteer Family and released in July reports that more than 70 percent of youths ages 12 to 17 have volunteered. Of those surveyed, around one in three have lent a hand toward helping children.
Without the resources to write a big check or the experience to serve a civic office, the nation’s young people are donating their time and talents to make a difference in their communities.
