Former Missouri wide receiver Tommy Saunders was arrested for second-degree assault Friday, Columbia Police Department Sergeant Chris Kelley said.

Kelley said the incident for which Saunders was arrested occurred at 1:25 a.m. Friday on South Ninth Street. The victim required medical attention and had multiple broken nose bones and a concussion.

Kelley said witnesses on the scene identified the suspect as Saunders and that Saunders turned himself in to the police Friday evening.

Saunders, whose playing career ended after the 2008 season had been working with the team as a volunteer assistant this year. Missouri athletic department spokesman Chad Moller said the team would have no comment on the matter because Saunders was not officially a member of the team.
