COLUMBIA — Derrick Washington had rushed for 62 yards and a touchdown in the first half of Missouri’s game Saturday against Iowa State. But as the team ran out of the locker room for the second half, Washington was preparing to watch the game from the sideline with his pads off.
He had to miss the second half with a concussion.
That’s when De’Vion Moore and Kendial Lawrence approached him.
“He went out there, and he gave his all,” Moore said. “D-Wash went down, and we just had to reassure him, ‘You know what, don’t worry about it, we’ll pick it up.’”
The concussion made Washington's memory of the first half cloudy. But he said he remembers the conversation with Moore and Lawrence.
“At first, he didn’t really know what was going on,” Lawrence said. “Still now, he says he doesn’t know what went on in the first half. But it’s good that he OK now.”
Washington was happy with the way his replacements played. Moore and Lawrence combined to rush for 59 yards and a touchdown in the second half en route to the team’s 34-24 win against Iowa State.
“They played well,” Washington said. “They found their seams and creases and they hit them hard. There was a couple run losses that they had, but other than that they played extremely well. De’Vion got his first touchdown. I’m happy for him about that, I know he’s pretty happy about it too.”
Moore scored Missouri’s last touchdown, which gave the Tigers a two-score lead with 4:43 to play.
“Our running game was tremendous all day long,” quarterback Blaine Gabbert said. “When we needed tough yards on the ground, they got those tough yards.”
As a team, Missouri had 202 yards rushing.
“When we had to run the football, we did,” coach Gary Pinkel said. “And I think that’s real important..”
