Columbia College women's basketball team scores upset

COLUMBIA — The Columbia College women's basketball team upset Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) University 85-60 on Tuesday at the Arena of Southwell Complex. The Cougars, No. 14 in the NAIA Preseason Top 25, outscored the No. 6 Lions 51-32 in the second half and and forced 28 turnovers.

Columbia College (5-1) allowed Freed-Hardeman only four second-half field goals, and the Lions (7-1) stayed in the game at the free-throw line, going 23-for-25. All of the Cougars' starters scored in double figures, with Veronica Smith and Rachel Oswald grabbing double-doubles.

Smith had a game-high 25 points and 12 rebounds, while Oswald had 14 points and 10 rebounds. Whitney Davis followed with 11 points, and Janita Session and Whitney Widaman finished with 10 a piece.

The Cougars, whose only loss this season came against No. 1 Union (Tenn.) University, plays next at 2 p.m. Saturday against Lyon (Ark.) College in Batesville, Ark.
