COLUMBIA — The MU Police Department was re-accredited Saturday at a national accreditation commission convention in Salt Lake City.

The MU Police Department met all 356 of the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies standards for re-accreditation. The department's accreditation is valid until 2012. The department was last accredited in 2006.

According previous Missourian reports, commission representatives visited Columbia in August and conducted an on-site assessment. The assessment included MU Police employee interviews, ride-alongs, collecting public opinions by telephone and exit interviews.

At the conference, the department was also recognized as a CALEA Flagship Agency. According to the commission's Web site, the award is based on past honors, current assessments and the department’s professional standing within their community. It is meant to acknowledge departments that have shown success in the accreditation process.
