PrintCOLUMBIA — Gov. Jay Nixon said in his State of the State speech that he wanted to "expand access to affordable health care, particularly for the 150,000 Missouri children who are uninsured today."
But the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that Nixon has resisted a proposal that could immediately cover Missouri's children. A federal law urges states to check for low-income families using state services but not currently enrolled in Medicaid. The data would allow states to automatically enroll children eligible for Medicaid.
But, as the Post-Dispatch reports, Nixon's office is concerned with the cost and is backing off the proposal; it's estimated 27,500 children would gain coverage and that it would cost nearly $33 million annually.
Nixon has made more cuts to the state's budget this year. In late October, he cut $204 million that included $32.45 million in Medicaid costs.
Despite the cost, do you think Nixon should go ahead with his plan and cover more children with health insurance?

The children are our only hope in the future since we as a society of so called grown up intellectuals have screwed it up so badly.
You better start taking care of those children now because if you don't this society is doomed to keep repeating it's mistakes.
NO!!! Until our Chief Executive can figure out what's required to effectively run this State, he ought to learn to keep his mouth closed and stop the promises he can't keep.
Children in Missouri have access to health care even if they do not have a government issued health insurance card.
Parents need to know this.
