PrintCOLUMBIA — A 29-year-old mother of three was arrested Saturday on suspicion of driving drunk with her children in the car, according to the Columbia Police Department.
Mistelyn Lawson of Columbia was arrested at a shopping center at 1814 Paris Road after allegedly leading police on short chase from the intersection of Smarr Court and Paris Road, about a half a mile southeast of that location, according to Columbia Police Department Public Information Officer Jessie Haden.
Lawson was arrested at about 6:45 p.m. Saturday on suspicion of:
- driving while intoxicated;
- three counts of endangering a child;
- resisting arrest;
- driving with a suspended license;
- littering;
- operating a motor vehicle in a careless and
imprudent manner
- and violating child restraint laws.
Haden said Lawson’s children, a 7-month-old male, a 2-year-old female and a 10-year-old male were with her at the time of her arrest.
Haden said an officer saw a purple minivan driven by Lawson turn off of Smarr Court in front of westbound traffic traveling on Paris Road, which caused one driver to slam on the brakes to avoid hitting the van.
According to Haden, the officer pursued the van northeast on Paris Road and immediately turned on the patrol car's lights, but the van accelerated. The officer said a plastic cup was tossed from the vehicle’s passenger side window and the van had crossed the center line at least once.
The officer also said that Lawson parked the van at the location of her arrest, exited the vehicle and was talking on her cell phone. According to the officer’s report, Lawson “appeared intoxicated” and was telling someone to “come get (her) kids” because she was being arrested.
Lawson was released at about 11:50 p.m. Saturday on a $20,085 bond.
