The Columbia College volleyball team started the NAIA national tournament in Sioux City, Iowa, with a 25-18, 25-14, 25-22 loss to 19th-ranked Lee (Tenn.) University (34-5). It was the first time the Cougars (37-3) has been swept all season.
Columbia College hit just 0.070 for the match and combined for 35 kills. The Cougars had nine service errors and 26 hitting errors and did not post a block in the match.
Nicole Murphy’s 10 kills led the Cougars. Paula Ferreira had 28 assists, while Tally Mattos and Monica Santos combined for 33 of Columbia’s 53 digs.
The Cougars, making their 16th straight trip to the tournament, return to pool play Wednesday. Columbia College will face No. 20-ranked Lubbock Christian (Texas) University at 3:15 p.m.
