INDEPENDENCE— Police in Independence say a 68-year-old driver was choking on coffee when he lost control of his minivan and struck a construction worker. The 29-year-old man later died.

The accident happened around 8 a.m. Tuesday on U.S. 24 in front of a fast-food restaurant. Police say a crew from a private contracting firm was doing utility work along the road when the driver took a sip of coffee and began choking, hitting two of the workers.

One of the workers became pinned under the van and suffered fatal injuries. The other worker was also hurt.

Names of the driver and the workers weren't released Tuesday. An investigation was continuing.
