PrintCOLUMBIA — A 40-year-old tradition continues this week as the MU Forestry Club sells Christmas trees on the northeast side of Memorial Stadium. The club will sell trees from Thursday through Sunday and Dec. 11 to 13.
Customers can choose from a variety of Scotch pine and balsam fir trees.
When: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. (except Thursday when hours are 3 to 8 p.m.), Thursday through Sunday and Dec. 11 to 13

"The Scotch pine grows in Missouri, and the balsam fir trees aren't grown in Missouri but are brought down from up north," said Mark Peper, who manages the Forestry Club's Christmas tree farm.
The Scotch pines are from the Starr Pines Christmas Tree Farm in Boonville and sell for $5 per foot. Balsam fir trees start at $20 a tree and are from E.H. Glueck & Co. in St.Louis.
Proceeds will be used for club activities and trips to academic and professional conferences.
In the past, the club operated its own Christmas tree farm in southeast Columbia. Now, it has started a new pine plantation northeast of Columbia. According to Peper, 80 acres have been planted, and it will be about three years before the trees can be harvested.
"It takes eight to 10 years for a tree to get a good establishment for harvesting," Peper said.
