Today's Question: Do you agree with increasing troop levels in Afghanistan?

The announcement of President Obama's Tuesday press conference brought the issue of America's involvement in war to its people's attention once again.

A Monday Washington Post article detailed what Obama plans next in an effort to help stabilize Afghanistan and eventually allow the U.S. military to leave the area. The decision will send 34,000 troops to Afghanistan to bring the total number to 100,000.

The hope is that by sending more American troops to the troubled country now, the Afghan government will gain strength more quickly and be able to defend itself against groups like the Taliban.

Obama wants the people of Afghanistan to gradually be able to take control of security and safety in their country throughout 2010, but he has said that possibility will depend on several factors.

Obama said during his campaign last year that he hoped to move the emphasis of the American military strategy from Iraq to Afghanistan. However, the terrain of Afghanistan makes it a difficult country to navigate and presentation of an "exit strategy" is arguably overshadowed by a decision to increase military presence first.
