The Columbia College volleyball team came from behind to defeat Lubbock Christian (Texas) University on Wednesday in pool play at the NAIA national championships in Sioux City, Iowa.
The first game was tied 16 times before the Chaps gained a 30-28 victory, but the Cougars went on to win the next three games 25-23, 25-17 and 25-22 to claim victory.
Monica Santos finished with a match-high 18 kills for the Cougars (38-3). Maria Omondi had 15 kills in 26 attempts, while Nicole Murphy and Cate Eckhardt each had 10 kills. Setter Paula Ferreira made 55 assists, put down six kills and had 18 digs. Murphy’s four blocks and five service aces gave the Cougars the boast they needed to close out the match. Tally Mattos finished with 29 digs.
Columbia College finishes pool play at 3:15 p.m. Thursday against Georgetown (Ky.) College. Columbia needs to win to advance to bracket play on Friday. Like the Cougars, Georgetown is 1-1 in the pool after defeating Lubbock Christian and falling to Lee University.
