COLUMBIA — The Voluntary Action Center matched up more than 1,000 Boone County families and individuals with sponsors from the community who plan to donate gifts and food.
Program director Marissa Todd said the clients and sponsors signed up in October. The center sent sponsors — including churches, businesses, civic groups and individuals — information about the families so they would have all of November and part of December to do their shopping.
Every family that signed up was sponsored by Nov. 18, which was earlier than usual.
"Usually they're all sponsored by Thanksgiving, but we had them all sponsored by the Wednesday before Thanksgiving," Todd said. "So we were very pleased with the speed."
Sponsors will bring their gifts to Trinity Presbyterian Church, 1600 W. Rollins Road on December 7, 8, 14 and 15.
Todd said if anyone else would like to donate, they can send a monetary gift to the VAC or bring gifts on one of the drop-off days.
"We really couldn't do it without the generosity of the community," Todd said. "We're thankful for their support."
