University of Missouri System President Gary Forsee has drawn attention because of a perceived contradiction regarding climate change.
Forsee sent a letter Nov. 17 to Missouri's congressional delegation urging opposition to cap-and-trade climate change legislation, which would provide incentives for capping carbon emissions. In the letter, Forsee said the proposed cap-and-trade legislation "will significantly increase the energy expenditures" for MU, UM-Kansas City, UM-St. Louis and the Missouri Institute of Science and Technology.
But Forsee has drawn criticism from students and faculty because of his letter. It's cited as a contradiction to his earlier support for reducing emissions on the campuses that he showed through signing a petition through the American College and University Presidents' Climate Commitment.
A university spokeswoman has said that Forsee continues to support sustainable efforts at the campus level, but that this federal legislation could have heavier financial ramifications at a systemwide level.
