UPDATE: Ex-Missouri House speaker facing assault charge is released on bond

JEFFERSON CITY — A former Missouri House speaker accused of assaulting a woman in southeastern Missouri is free on bond.
Rod Jetton, 42, was charged Monday in Scott County with felony second-degree assault. The Cole County Sheriff's Department in Jefferson City said Jetton turned himself in there on Monday and was released on a $2,500 bond.

According to a probable cause statement, Jetton went to a woman's house Nov. 15 to have sex. The woman said Jetton struck and choked her.
Jetton, a Republican from Marble Hill, was elected to the House in 2000 and served as speaker from 2005 until he left the legislature after the 2008 session. Jetton now works as a consultant in Jefferson City.
Jetton's attorney said the former lawmaker is not guilty and is shocked by the allegation.
