COLUMBIA — A Boone County high school student's girlfriend has the county's stormwater program to thank for her Christmas presents this year.
The student, Hunter Allen, designed a logo for the county's stormwater management logo contest. Allen received $100 in the form of an oversized check Wednesday night for his winning design. Runners-up Allie Smith and Megan Pearson received $50 each.

The contest has been in progress since early in the school year. Boone County Stormwater Coordinator Georganne Bowman said the winning logo will appear on the county Web site, brochures, fact sheets and public events.
Allen’s prize money, he said, would be going toward Christmas presents for his girlfriend. Runner-up Megan Pearson said she was going to get herself a pedicure because she’s never had one, and Allie Smith said she didn’t have any plans for the money so far — though her mother chimed in and said she was taking her to dinner.
Allen didn’t know much about the stormwater program when he started making his winning design.
“Honestly, I hadn’t heard much about it, but I learned a lot," he said.
The 10 finalists chosen were given the chance to take a design class with Deborah Huelsbergen, MU associate professor and director of undergraduate studies for the art department, in order to digitize their sketches.
“People make college seem boring, but it wasn’t boring at all," Smith said.
Allen, the winner, said that he’s never classified himself as the “artsy” type.
“They (MU designers) taught me everything,” he said.
Allen’s teacher, Dianne Bollinger, was awarded $200 to purchase new classroom supplies. She said she’s going to spend the money on art supplies, including Sharpie markers.
