COLUMBIA — Jan Mees, president of the Columbia School Board, will run for a second term in the April 2010 election.
"Having served for three years, I've gained some experience," Mees said Thursday.
People interested in running for School Board can file their candidacy beginning at 8 a.m. Tuesday. Two three-year positions are open as well as a one-year position. The board has seven members.
The one-year position is currently held by James Whitt, who was appointed in June after Rosie Tippin stepped down after serving about a year. Tippin, who resigned for health reasons, died in July.
Whitt said Thursday he will decide in the next few days whether to run.
Karla DeSpain, a former board president, said when she was elected in 2007 that it would be her last term, and on Thursday she said she hasn't changed her mind. This is her ninth year on the board.
Filing must be done in person at the district office, 1818 W. Worley St. The deadline is 5 p.m. Jan. 19.
