Former aide to Gov. Blunt cleared of misconduct charge

JEFFERSON CITY — An aide fired by former Gov. Matt Blunt's office has been cleared of misconduct by Missouri's attorney discipline office.

Attorney Scott Eckersley claimed he was fired after raising concerns about e-mail deletions in Blunt's office. A lengthy legal battle ensued as Blunt's administration claimed Eckersley was fired for legitimate reasons.

During the spat, former Blunt legal counsel Henry Herschel filed a disciplinary complaint that could have cost Eckersley his law license.

In a letter dated last week, the Office of Chief Disciplinary Counsel said it found no grounds for action against Eckersley. Eckersley provided a copy of the letter to The Associated Press.

The state agreed in May to pay $500,000 to settle Eckersley's wrongful termination and defamation lawsuit.
