PrintCOLUMBIA — The city established a new commission Monday night to assess possible new bus routes and consider broader transit issues that involve vehicles and pedestrians.
Public Works spokeswoman Jill Stedem said the Public Transportation Advisory Commission will assist the council in finding ways to make local transit more effective.

Councilman Paul Sturtz said before the meeting, “This just makes sense.”
The commission will also have other roles. It will serve as a sounding board for citizens concerned about pedestrian, safety and access issues.
In addition, the group may recommend marketing strategies that improve the image of public transportation in Columbia and increase its usage.
Nine members will make up the body. One will represent MU and be appointed by the chancellor. Another will represent the city's Disabilities Commission. The council amended to proposal to include a representative from the Bicycle and Pedestrian Commission. The remaining members will be appointed by the council.
Stedem said the city is taking a proactive stand to lessen future problems, but public transportation is “not in a bad state at all.”

We all know how we hate traveling in public transit where we have to breathe in others people stinky arm pits. Especially if we have to breathe in when they are sneezing or coughing.
