PrintCOLUMBIA — The speed limit on Stadium Boulevard will slow to 30 mph near the Columbia Independent School zone after the City Council approved the change Monday night.
Signs with flashing yellow lights will alert drivers to the slower speed limit between Timber Creek Drive to Aaron Drive. The lights will flash between 7:30 and 8:15 a.m. and 3 to 3:45 p.m.
The new limit will take effect when school resumes in January 2010.
The city is also asking for an amendment to city code to alter the speed limit on portions of West Broadway. Signs are already in place to increase the speed limit to 45 mph on Broadway near Brickton Road and decrease it to 45 mph near Rustic Road.
The Missouri Department of Transportation sets speed limits on roadways itmaintains, but the city must adopt an ordinance to enforce the limits.

I understand it's important for school zones to be a lower speed limit, however, that being said, I'd just like to say what a terrible location the Independent School picked. Granted the building is nice enough but the location couldn't be worse as far as traffic is concerned. It's not like traffic on Stadium isn't bad enough in the mornings and afternoons, but they had to put a school there that requires parents to drive their children to school! This is putting at least a hundred more vehicles on an already over crowded roadway. Personally this has added almost 10 extra minutes to my morning commute. So I've done my part, I've changed my direction of travel and no longer come the easiest route, I go out of my way to avoid that portion of Stadium now. Did anyone ever consider traffic conditions when they chose that location????
