State investigating contamination at Cedar Creek Lake

COLUMBIA — An overflow of more than 50,000 gallons of untreated water has contaminated a lake near the Rock Bridge Estates subdivision.

The overflow, discovered by the Boone County Regional Sewer District on Friday afternoon, was caused by grease and rags blocking part of the sewer line.

The blockage caused untreated water to overflow a manhole that serves the Rock Bridge Estates subdivision. The untreated water flowed into an unnamed tributary into Cedar Creek Lake and poses a significant threat to public health and the environment, according to a news release from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.

The department sent investigators to collect samples and investigate the overflow on Friday evening and Saturday.

Renee Bungart, a spokeswoman for the department, said this type of blockage is common to sewer lines and are usually caused by debris from nearby businesses and residences.
