Fatal wrecks down in Missouri in 2009

ST. LOUIS — Despite a rash of fatal accidents over the holiday weekend, the number of fatal wrecks in Missouri is down significantly this year.

KWMU-90.7 FM reports that fatal wrecks statewide are down 10 percent in 2009. The Missouri Department of Transportation says it would mark the fourth straight yearly decline.

MoDOT says a 2004 constitutional amendment directing more money to road construction has improved safety. But spokeswoman Sally Oxenhandler says a tougher seatbelt law allowing police to pull over drivers simply for not wearing their seatbelt would give Missouri an additional $20 million in federal funding and cut fatalities even further.
