Wet year raises spring flood concerns in St. Louis

Monday, December 28, 2009 | 12:12 p.m. CST

ST. LOUIS — The wet weather in St. Louis has the National Weather Service watching precipitation and river levels closely.

Officials say while it's still too early to tell, more rainfall and melting snow further north could spell flood trouble come spring.

St. Louis has had 50.8 inches of rain this year — 12.4 inches above normal.

Weather Service meteorologist Julie Phillipson says this year is shaping up to be the fifth wettest year for St. Louis. Last year was the wettest with 57.9 inches.

Phillipson said there is minor flooding along the Mississippi River at Grafton and Chester, Ill., but that the Missouri River is well within its banks from Columbia east.

Spring is normally a period with a lot of rain. If there is a lot of snow melt, significant springtime flooding is possible.
