Tests reveal agricultural pollutants in Lake of the Ozarks

JEFFERSON CITY — Water samples from Missouri's Lake of the Ozarks show contamination from some agricultural chemicals, but officials say tests for other pollutants were normal.

The state Department of Natural Resources took 78 samples from the sprawling mid-Missouri lake over 10 days in October to evaluate the water's quality.

The study followed criticism of the agency and Gov. Jay Nixon for a month-long delay in releasing a report on high levels of E. coli bacteria in the lake.

Results of the new study were released Tuesday. Nitrogen levels exceeded state standards at most sites. Phosphorus levels exceeded state standards throughout the lake.

Also Tuesday, Nixon proposed new water quality rules for distressed waterways, increasing inspections and restricting wastewater permits.
