PrintCOLUMBIA — Beginning in January, two city buses will offer a three-month trial period for wireless Internet access.
Wi-Fi will be available on Bus No. 1969 of the 102 Blue East Route that runs down Paris Road and Clark Lane and on Bus No. 1970 of the 103 Green West Route, which runs down Worley Street to the Columbia Mall.
Setup and equipment will cost the city $515. Sprint Corp. will provide the service.
"We chose 1969 and 1970 because these buses have the longest routes in Columbia," said Jill Stedem, spokeswoman for the city Public Works Department. She said the city will survey riders after the trial to see whether the service is warranted.
A 2008 survey by the American Public Transportation Association showed that more than 20 cities nationwide offer wireless Internet on buses.
"Wi-Fi on buses gives you research on the go and more time to relax and enjoy the rest of the day," APTA spokeswoman Virginia Miller said.
