COLUMBIA — Two men were arrested after a SWAT team surrounded the apartment they were in after a five-hour standoff in the 2500 block of Quail Drive.
The men were apprehended in connection with reports of a stolen vehicle. The men and vehicle are believed to be from St. Louis, according to Columbia Police Department spokeswoman Jessie Haden; Haden said that the apartment is believed to be the residence of a relative or acquaintance. The men are also suspected of breaking into cars and fraudulent credit card use, she added.
Cody Baker, a neighbor, said police units appeared around 6 a.m. Haden said a witness spotted the vehicle early in the morning and alerted the police. SWAT teams first arrived on the scene at 10:30 a.m.
Fresh footsteps in the snow leading into the house, but not out, led police to believe the men were hiding in an apartment unit of the house.
When the SWAT team arrived, they sent in a robot equipped with a camera to survey the house. At 1 p.m., OC gas, commonly known as pepper spray, was introduced to the apartment.
One suspect, a 28-year-old male, emerged.
The other adult male stayed inside until five or six SWAT team members went into the house at around 3 p.m.
