PrintCOLUMBIA — The cold weather gripping Columbia isn’t going anywhere, according to the National Weather Service.
More snow is expected later this week, and sub-freezing temperatures are forecast for Columbia through early next week. If Columbia doesn’t warm up to more than 20 degrees by Wednesday, this winter will make the list of worst cold snaps in Columbia history.
The National Weather Service predicts temperatures will stay below 20 degrees through Saturday, which would be the ninth day of temperatures that low. A streak that long hasn’t happened since 1983.
The longest Columbia has gone without recording a temperature above 20 degrees was 11 days in both 1899 and 1936. If temperatures remain this low through Jan. 12, that record will be broken.
The record for consecutive days with a high of fewer than 32 degrees is 26, set in 1977. The National Weather Service only forecasts a week in advance, but according to its meteorologist Doug Tilly, "we don't expect any major warmup in the foreseeable future."

I'm an MU student from Minnesota and am back for winter break right now. In my experience, people from Columbia and Missouri in general are some of the biggest whiners when it comes to the cold. Oh well I guess I'll just go sledding in -20 wind chills now.

Global warming must also have a frost cycle.
Mr Henneboehle I must agree with you on the complaining about cold weather and the snow fall. I grew up in a very cold weather region of the nation myself and they rarely if never closed the schools down for any kind of weather. Maybe if the City of Columbia would stop investing in bike lanes and endless park projects they would have more money for proper snow and ice removal.
When all else fails pull down your pants ans slide on the ice.
