Winter storm watch issued for Columbia

COLUMBIA — Snow and extreme cold has prompted a winter storm watch for the Columbia area from Wednesday afternoon through Thursday afternoon.
A significant winter storm was set to impact a large part of Missouri and Illinois. "All in all ... if not properly prepared for ... this storm could be a threat to life," the National Weather Service in St. Louis said in a statement issued late Tuesday afternoon.

Three to 5 inches of snow was expected by Thursday morning. Winds were forecast to increase to between 15 and 25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph. The combination of wind and Arctic air will result in dangerously low wind chills that could reach between 15 and 25 below zero by Thursday.
Blowing and drifting snow was also expected to reduce visibility and make travel hazardous.
