PrintCOLUMBIA — While the weather last week was bone-chilling by any definition, it fell short of making the list for worst cold snaps in Columbia history.
If temperatures had remained below 20 degrees on Jan. 6, the period Jan. 1-8 would have been the third-longest spell below 20 degrees in Columbia’s history. But the National Weather Service recorded a high temperature of 22 degrees on Jan. 6.
The longest streak of days below 20 degrees was 11, which happened in 1899 and 1936.
Columbia could also have set a record if temperatures had remained below 25 degrees for 11 days.
Columbia still has a chance at the record books, should temperatures stay below 32 degrees for 17 days. However, the temperature in Columbia reached 31 degrees by early afternoon Monday, and the National Weather Service forecasts temperatures hitting 40 degrees by Wednesday.
