COLUMBIA — The Rock Bridge 4-H Club will be collecting unwanted electronics for proper disposal from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Rock Bridge Elementary.
Free disposal: laptops, wires, central processing units, peripherals, cell phones, printers, fax machines, stereos
$5 disposal fee: computer monitors, microwaves, copiers
$10 disposal fee: TVs
Non-profit organizations are charged for TVs only.
Where: Rock Bridge Elementary parking lot, 5151 S. Highway 163
When: Jan. 16, 2010; 10 a.m. to noon
Why: Substances electronics release in landfills and incinerators include lead, cadmium, beryllium, epoxy resins, polychlorinated biphenyls, polyvinyl chloride, polybrominated diphenyl ethers and others.
Potential health effects include cancer, birth defects, learning and memory impairment, chronic illness, and other serious risks according to the United States National Library of Medicine’s TOXNET.
What else you should know: Remove personal information from machines. Bring to Rock Bridge Elementary. Mid-Mo recycling will responsibly dispose of all items. Mid-Mo Recycling is registered with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.
