PrintCOLUMBIA — Two Columbia teenagers were arrested on suspicion of shooting and attempting to rob a Walmart employee on Dec. 14.
Through surveillance video footage, Columbia police were able to identify the car the suspects were thought to have been driving — a Dodge Intrepid. On Jan. 6, police received a tip that a car of the same description was behind 1004 Elleta Blvd.
The vehicle was towed and processed for evidence. Its owner, a 25-year-old woman, is thought to have been the driver of the vehicle when the incident occurred, Jessie Haden, public information officer for the Columbia Police Department, said.
After the car was found, witnesses were interviewed and two male suspects identified, police said.
The 16-year-old male, identified as the shooter in the incident, was arrested Jan. 8 on charges of first-degree assault, first-degree burglary and armed criminal action. Darrius Davis, 17, was arrested on charges of first-degree assault and first-degree robbery on Jan. 12.
Davis made "incriminating statements" during an interview with police but the juvenile "was not cooperative," Haden said.
The incident occurred outside of the Walmart at 415 Conley Road. Around 3 a.m., Walmart employee Ken Jacobs, 54, of Ashland was returning to work after his break when he was confronted by two people wearing orange ski masks.
One of the two demanded money from him and shot him three times with a rifle — twice in the back and once in the hand. Police recovered six .22 caliber shell casings at the scene, according to previous Missourian reports.
They then tried to take money from Jacobs, Haden said.
Jacobs has since been released from University Hospital.
"He's doing OK," Haden said.
Davis was being held in the Boone County jail on a bond of $500,000 Wednesday afternoon. The juvenile suspect was in the custody of the Juvenile Justice Center.
Police are not considering the woman a suspect, Haden said.
"At this point, she is a witness," she said.
