New chambers for City Council nearly complete
Facilities are designed to promote interaction between the public and the council.

COLUMBIA — The Columbia City Council will begin meeting in its new chambers on Feb. 15. Here are a few things to know about it.
- The new chambers are on the first floor of the City Hall addition at Eighth Street and Broadway, and improved access was part of the design plan.
- It replaces the chambers on the fourth floor of the Daniel Boone Building, home to the City Council since September 1976.
- The new chambers will have 200 chairs that can be moved easily when needed.
- Wireless Internet service will be provided as well as a lectern designed for easy hookup of speakers' laptopsduring presentations.
- The room has six large plasma screens and seven remote-control cameras for multimedia presentations and live broadcasting.
- The room's construction features many recycled and renewable materials, including bamboo wall paneling, panel-backing made from straw and carpeting made in part from recycled materials.
