COLUMBIA – Looking ahead to the forecasted warmer weather, Columbia Parks and Recreation has closed Stephens Lake Park for ice skating and Cosmo-Bethel Park for ice fishing.
The predicted highs above 40 degrees will cause the ice on both lakes to thin and melt, the department said in a release.
Parks and Recreation spokeswoman Tammy Miller said the lakes would be reopened if another large cold snap were to occur this season.
Park users are asked to stay off the lakes until further notice. The Columbia Fire Department responds to an average of 10 ice water rescue calls each winter, the majority of which involve animals that have wandered onto the ice and fallen through, according to the release.
