COLUMBIA — Highway WW closed down Saturday afternoon because of a head-on collision east of Rangeline Road.
A Geo Prizm collided with a Ford Festiva at about 1 p.m.
Both drivers were sent to University Hospital with moderate injuries, said Missouri State Highway Patrol Trooper Scott Ballard. There were no passengers.
The collision occurred between Rangeline Road and Montrose Avenue, east of Columbia. Traffic was redirected while emergency crews responded to the collision.
The driver of the green Prizm was heading east, crossed the double yellow line and hit the red Festiva head-on, Ballard said. The Festiva ended up perpendicular to the road on the side of the hill.
The names of the drivers have not been released, and authorities did not know why the Prizm crossed into on-coming traffic.
A woman died in a collision on Friday on the same road, a little bit west. But Ballard said the two accidents were different and do not signal a pattern, as the other driver in Friday's collision rolled through a stop sign.

NOT moderate injuries... one of the 2 suffered severe injuries.. I know this for a fact, She was my niece, she passed away at about 5:40 this afternoon(Saturday Jan.16,2010) from those injuries. she will be sorely missed by many. She would have been 22 years old next month, She had finally found a great man who treated her the way a woman was meant to be treated and was planning her wedding for June. I will say exactly what I would say in public, if people would have more regard for the law, and more importantly, human life this accident wouldn't have happened and Brandy would still be with us! I know State Road WW very well as my mother in law lives there and I know that people drive like maniacs up and down that road constantly. Something HAS to be done! just yesterday another woman died as a result of a wreck on that road. How many more?
I agree with A White. Something has to be done about the speeders. Maybe they should have more patrol or something out there. My friend and I took WW into Columbis Thursday night. People are idiots on that road. A White I am so very sorry about your niece. Her best friend was at my house when she got the news. Yes she will be sadly missed by everyone that knew her. May God give your family peace and comfort at this time.
Route WW and the lettered routes it connects to in Callaway County were once part of the shortest cross-state "auto route" between Kansas City and St. Louis. There were "route cards," strip maps, available for such routes, which were never designed to carry vehicular traffic at high speeds. On the Callaway County side there are two sets of very sharp curves, one set east and one west of Millersburg, and there was until recently a one-lane bridge, replaced by a modern two-lane bridge.
BTW, The historic route crossed the Missouri River by ferry boat northwest of Rocheport; there was no bridge in that day.
Of equal concern, there are no viable shoulders in many places along the route: if you leave the pavement you will probably find yourself in a ditch.
A reasonable motorist would view those situations and drive accordingly.
Brandy and I where going to be married in June. Mr. Young had no business on the road and should be punshised for it to the full extent of the law.
