COLUMBIA — Judge Gene Hamilton will resign as presiding judge of the 13th Judicial Circuit, he announced Thursday in a news release.
He will resign as presiding judge March 26 and will retire as a circuit judge effective June 30.
Hamilton was first elected circuit judge in 1982 and has been the presiding judge since September 2002.
In his time as a circuit judge, Hamilton presided over more than 500 jury trials, including 50 homicide trials, according to the release.
Hamilton was a prosecuting attorney in Callaway County from 1970 to 1980.
Hamilton is a graduate of the class on arbitration and mediation at the MU School of Law, and he intends to continue work in arbitration and mediation after he retires.
