The Columbia College women's basketball team lost its first game of 2010 and just its second of the season, falling 65-63 at Peru State (Neb.) on Monday in a nonconference contest. The loss breaks an 18-game winning streak.
After trailing 34-26 at halftime, the Cougars (18-2) took a two-point advantage with just less than four minutes left, but struggled to hold the lead after turning the ball over in back-to-back possessions. The Cougars led 63-62 with 24 seconds left and choose to foul, sending Peru State to the free-throw line where it made both attempts. The Cougars final shot missed and the Bobcats (8-13) made a final free-throw.
Veronica Smith and Rachel Oswald each had 13 points for Columbia College, while Whitney Widaman finished with 12 and Kirsti Wilkerson had 10. Smith led the Cougars with 12 rebounds.
For the second time this month, Oswald was named the American Midwest Conference Player of the Week on Monday. Oswald averaged 23 points and 7.5 rebounds last week to help the Cougars, No. 8 in the NAIA, extend their win streak.
The Cougars return to American Midwest Conference action at 5:30 p.m. Thursday when they play Harris-Stowe State in St. Louis
