I-66 project connecting Missouri to the coasts gets another look

CAPE GIRARDEAU — The idea of an interstate highway connecting southeast Missouri to the U.S. coasts is still in the works.

The Southeast Missourian reported that business and political leaders in Cape Girardeau heard Monday about the I-66 project, first proposed 20 years ago.

Consultant Lonnie Haefner said the estimated cost of building the interstate has risen from $17.5 billion to $60 billion.

Haefner said the highway would draw traffic off Interstates 40 and 70 and could make Cape Girardeau a transportation center.

Before the end of this year, Congress must authorize spending on highways for the next five years.

Haefner said the Obama administration's emphasis on high-impact projects has given new impetus to the I-66 proposal.
