Race relations agreement in Kirkwood prompted by shooting

KIRKWOOD — It was nearly two years ago that a shooting rampage at Kirkwood City Hall prompted a closer look at race relations in the St. Louis County community.
Some say a new mediation agreement is the first step in healing those old wounds. But KSDK-TV reports that at a meeting on Monday, others said the pact falls short in addressing the tough issues.

The Department of Justice helped initiate the mediation after a black resident, Charles "Cookie" Thornton, walked into City Hall with a gun in February 2008 and killed two police officers and four city officials before he was gunned down by police.
The mediation document includes goals of creating a new automated system for tracking complaints, funding and training a human rights commission, and helping attract minorities to youth programs.
