PrintCOLUMBIA — With 500 pounds of pancake mix, more than one half ton of sausage, 350 bottles of syrup and several dozen volunteers, the Cosmopolitan International Luncheon Club of Columbia has found the recipe for a fantastic breakfast.
Pancakes will be flipping fast off the griddle when the club, also known as the Cosmo Club, begins its 60th annual breakfast on Saturday. By 6 a.m., the 50 to 60 volunteers serving flapjacks will have already spent about two hours preparing.
The club hopes the breakfast will raise $5,000 for causes like the Ronald McDonald House. In previous years, Cosmopolitan Park and the Cosmopolitan International Diabetes and Endocrinology Center have benefited from the club's philanthropy.
Wayne Wootton, a 25-year veteran of the Cosmo Club’s pancake breakfast, said the event generally attracts 1,600 to 1,900 people, the record being 2,800.
Club members Kurt Kopp and Kenny Kvam met up at the Cosmo Club Community Center this morning for a shopping run. Kvam called the sausage patties “out of this world.” At $5 a ticket and all-you-can-eat pancakes, Kvam describes the breakfast as a “Columbia social event.”
The breakfast will be held from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m Saturday at the Cosmo Club Community Center, 1715 Burlington St. Children 6 years old and under are admitted free.
