JEFFERSON CITY — A Missouri lawmaker wants some prison inmates to spend more time behind bars.
Current law requires most Missouri inmates to serve at least 85 percent of their sentences for certain "dangerous felonies," including rape, arson, kidnapping and murder.
A bill proposed by Republican Sen. Kurt Schaefer, of Columbia, would apply the "dangerous felony" rule to other sex offenses. Those crimes include statutory rape and sodomy, sexual assault, child molestation, sexual abuse and sexual misconduct involving a child.
People convicted of attempted forcible rape and sodomy are now required to serve 85 percent of their sentences only if the victim was injured. Schaefer's bill would eliminate the injury requirement.
