COLUMBIA — Olivet Christian Church will hold a film discussion series for Lent around issues of race and class. Larry Brown will lead the sessions at 5 p.m. on the Sunday evenings leading to Easter, beginning on Feb. 21 and ending on March 28.
Films for discussion include “Grand Canyon,” “Frozen River,” “The Station Agent,” “The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada,” and “The Shawshank Redemption,” all of which point to various controversial aspects of race and class.
Although many churches might have special programs for Lent, Brown said these issues are one of the priorities of the church as its “future visioning process.”
Because of distressing events and raw language in the featured films, the series is for adults.
“We want folks to look at estrangement as connected to race and class,” Brown said. “These movies are metaphors for our lives. They help with our contemporary experience.”
This is the first time the series will be held at Olivet Christian Church, but Brown has facilitated similar discussions at other churches.
